CUSTOMIZE YOUR VISUAL FREEDOM:

LADARVISION Custom Cornea videoWe are pleased to announce that we have the ladarvision laserCUSTOMCORNEA® and that it is now possible for you to have a truly customized laser vision procedure. CUSTOMCORNEA® represents a major breakthrough in laser vision correction and can deliver results even BETTER than conventional laser vision correction. It is the only excimer laser system that allows wavefront diagnostic technology to actually guide an excimer laser during a laser vision correction procedure.

CUSTOMCORNEA® uses the LADARWave™ Wavefront System to measure distortions in your eye's entire optical system. Until now, conventional laser vision correction, like glasses and contact lenses could only correct the visual distortions called, "lower order aberrations" commonly known as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. It is estimated that these lower order aberrations account for 85-90% of the overall quality of your vision.

Since the mid-1800's eye doctors have measured how well we see using the Snellen Eye Chart. But the Snellen vision test can only measure how much vision you have (quantity) not how well you see (quality). According to the Snellen vision test, your vision is considered "normal" if you can identify the letters on the 20/20 line from a distance of 20 feet. But just being able to identify the letters doesn't necessarily mean you have excellent vision, especially if they are not crisp and clear.

Today we know there are other imperfections in your eye's optical system that can affect the clarity of your vision and how well you see at night and in low light levels. We call these visual distortions, "higher order aberrations." They can be the cause of glare, shadows, halos and other annoying visual effects. All eyes have some level of higher and lower order aberrations so every patient has the potential to see better with CUSTOMCORNEA®.

CUSTOMCORNEA® addresses the other 10-15% of your eye's optical imperfections that can affect the quality of vision after laser vision correction. The goal of CUSTOMCORNEA® is to decrease the risk of undesirable side effects and improve both the quality of your vision and the quality of your lifestyle.

cornea mapCUSTOMCORNEA® is the process of reshaping your cornea to address both lower and higher order aberrations. This is accomplished by using the 3-D map of your unique optical imperfections as captured and measured by the LADARWave™ wavefront system to guide the LADARVision®4000 laser as it reshapes your cornea.

technitions using the ladarvision systemWavefront technology was originally pioneered in the field of astronomy and physics to aid in reducing 'aberrations' or imperfections in the multiple lenses of telescopes. In much the same way, we use LADARWave™ to provide us with an accurate assessment of the optical imperfections found in the entire eye's optical system.

Our practice is the first in this area to offer CUSTOMCORNEA® utilizing LADARWave™ wavefront technology to measure and address both lower and higher order aberrations (visual imperfections in the eye's optical system). Unless both lower and higher order aberrations are addressed during laser vision correction, the quality of your vision may not be ideal, even if you have post-operative vision of 20/20.

Here is how this exciting technology works:
flat light waves enter eye
flat light waves enter eye
Distorted light wave exits eye

First, flat waves of light are passed through your eye using a computerized wavefront-measuring instrument called LADARWave™. As the light waves travel through your eye's optical system, the imperfections in the eye distort the flat light waves. LADARWaveTM captures the distorted waves as they exit your eye and compares them to the perfectly flat light waves that would have been reflected if your optical system had no distortions.

Next, a 3D map is generated representing your unique visual distortions, including both lower and higher order aberrations. This map is then transferred to the LADARVision®4000 Excimer laser, and guides the laser as it reshapes your cornea, providing you with a truly customized laser vision procedure called CUSTOMCORNEA®

CUSTOMCORNEA® is the process of reshaping your cornea to reduce or eliminate both lower and higher order aberrations that can affect the quality of your vision and how well you see after your laser vision correction procedure.

On the day of your procedure, the LADARWave™ 3-D map, containing the aberrations of your eye is perfectly registered and aligned with the surface of your cornea.

Then, LADARVision®4000 Excimer laser with its radar eye tracker, tracks your eye movement at 4000 times per second.

Then using LADARVision®'s small spot laser beam your cornea is reshaped while addressing both higher and lower order aberrations.

The LADARVision® System is the only laser system that can maintain this precise registration and alignment of the eye while reshaping your cornea in the exact pattern defined by your personalized LADARWave™ 3-D map.
